Remembering Albert Albin by Darrel "Suds" Suddeth
I also think Al worked in Plant Trades. But before that work assignment, he worked near me on a pair of tandem lines in Bldg. 50 in the fall of 1958. He was full of interesting sea stories of his days serving as a merchant seaman during WWII. He sailed aboard Liberty ships and had many wild war stories. One of my favorite was the time he was aboard a ship in a convoy to Murmansk and his battle station was to man a wooden (fake) 4” gun on the fantail. If a U Boat surfaced near the convoy, the merchant seamen “gun crew” would run to the wooden deck gun and point it at the U Boat hoping to convince the U Boat Captain to dive. I remember another story when his ship carried trucks to Iran and the ship’s company was instructed to “train” men who had never driven a truck before to drive a truck north to the Soviet Union. He told me the crew members would get a man into the driver seat, show him how to step on the clutch, start the engine and show him how to let the clutch ‘out’ and point the direction he should drive and turn him loose. Al Albin was full of interesting stores for a twenty year old co-worker.

John A. Puente
Puente, John A.
Jan 14, 1939 - May 9, 2014
John Abraham Puente, "P Pa," age 75 of Omaha, died May 9, 2014 at Bergan Mercy Hospital after a courageous battle with lymphoma. He passed away peacefully with his family at his side on a beautiful spring day. John was born to Manuel A. and Juana Puente on January 14, 1939 in Grand Island, NE. He grew up in Grand Island in a close family with many brothers and sisters. He served and was a proud member of the Marine Corps. After discharge, he settled in Omaha, where he met, at a dance, Ramona Eileen, who proved to be the love of his life. They were united in marriage on July 3, 1964. John worked at then Western Electric. He took pride that he continued to work there through retirement. John enjoyed many things, but the light of his life was Ramona. He adored her. From the day that he met her until the day he died, nothing was more special to him than a simple dinner and movie with her. Their song, "Our Day Will Come," holds special meaning to the family. He also cherished family, always looking forward to the next family reunion, and recollecting those family members who had gone before him so as to preserve their legacy. He loved sharing Husker game day with friends and family, reading how-to books, sometimes just being silly, and taking walks with Ramona and the family canines. He always made time to catch up with his children and dote on his grandchildren. His greatest gift was his faith in God, which he passed on to his family. He had unwavering optimism that tomorrow's possibilities were endless as long as one truly believed. Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Ramona; 5 children: son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John Christopher and Theresa Puente of Lincoln, NE; daughter, Lisa M. Puente of Council Bluffs, IA; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie R. Puente-Prai and Scott Prai of Omaha; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Bradey Gotto of Carlsbad, CA; and son, Jacob Puente of Omaha; 7 grandchildren, Benjamin and Gabriel Puente of Lincoln, Alexis Baker of Iowa, Jessica Baker of Gretna, NE, Justin Prai of Omaha, Alesia Mason and Ella Gotto of Carlsbad, CA, and Payton Puente of Omaha; 1 great granddaughter, Maci Baker; 5 sisters and 2 brothers: Connie Puente, Mary Puente, Carmen Luna, all of Grand Island, Virginia and Richard Soto of Wood River, NE, Teresa and Richard Brown of Omaha, Manuel and Josie Puente of Grand Island, and Andrew and Nancy Puente of Grand Island; sister-in-law, Doris Puente of Baltimore, MD; brother-in-law, Jimmie Nelson of Grand Island; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Manuel, and his mother Juana; his sister Emily, and his brothers, Philip and Thomas Puente. John was an active member of Mary Our Queen Church.

Vetter, Hank
Passed away on March 28, 2014
Debbie Ridge and I attended a service for Hank Vetter on Tuesday April 1, 2014. He passed away on March 28th. There was no notice in the paper, I just happened to hear of his passing from a neighbor that attended the same church as Hank. I'm sure you would remember him as the "blind guy in Protectors." I don't know for sure, but I think he retired from AT&T. He was 88 years old and died of pneumonia. He is survived by his son, Hank Jr. and grandchildren.
I hope you can pass the word to the retirees. Thank you.
